Jahrhunderts erbaut &#8211; damals vor den Stadttoren. Die Essener \u00c4btissin Theophanu &#8211; eine Enkelin des deutschen Kaisers Otto II. &#8211; erhielt zu dieser Zeit von Kaiser Heinrich III. das Marktrecht und errichte dieses Gotteshaus als Kirche f\u00fcr die Marktleute. In ihrem Testament findet sich die erste urkundliche Erw\u00e4hnung, denn sie bestimmte, dass hier zu ihrem Ged\u00e4chtnis Kerzen entz\u00fcndet werden sollten.Etwa dreihundert Jahre sp\u00e4ter wurde die Kirche erstmals als Marktkirche bezeichnet. Im Mittelalter traf sich hier auch der Stadtrat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sie war die erste Kirche der Essener B\u00fcrgerschaft, die sich der Reformation anschloss. Deshalb wurde sie zur ersten protestantischen Kirche der Stadt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Im Laufe der Zeit wurde diese Kirche mehrfach umgebaut. Von den romanischen Urspr\u00fcngen ist nichts mehr zu sehen, sie ist heute eine teils sp\u00e4tgotische Hallenkirche. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde das Geb\u00e4ude stark zerst\u00f6rt. Die Reste waren dem zunehmenden Autoverkehr im Wege. Statt Abriss verkleinerte man die Grundfl\u00e4che der Kirche um fast die H\u00e4lfte auf die heutige Gr\u00f6\u00dfe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2006 erhielt die Kirche einen neuen Westchor aus blauem Glas. Dadurch wiegt der gl\u00e4serne Westchor rund 200 Tonnen. Mehr \u00fcber den Westchor nachlesen kannst du <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marktkirche-essen.de\/index.php?nav=main&amp;con=chor\/westchor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hier<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Das Glas spendete die in Essen ans\u00e4ssige Weltfirma Pilkington-Glas. Die Scheiben wurden mit blauer Farbe in unterschiedlicher St\u00e4rke bestrichen und gebrannt.
